Date: 11/18/2024
Dr. Benjamin Huffard, an orthopedic and sports medicine surgeon with
Northern Light Mercy Orthopedics, joined WMTW-TV recently to discuss the most common types of injuries associated with winter sports and how they can be prevented.
Dr. Huffard said since most winter sports involve slippery surfaces such as snow and ice, a lot of injuries come from falls. This can result in injuries to the upper body and head. Concussions are relatively common as are injuries to the shoulder, elbow and wrist.
Huffard said he and his team also see some sport-specific injuries, such as knee ligament injuries in downhill skiing and wrist injuries in snowboarding.
