Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Northern Light Health Director of Compliance and the Northern Light Health VP/Chief Compliance & Internal Audit Officer, the Northern Light Health Compliance and Privacy Officer (CO/PO) position carries out all compliance and privacy officer functions at Northern Light Mayo Regional Hospital (MRH) and Northern Light Maine CA Dean Hospital (CAD) (individually and collectively referred to herein as "Hospital"). The CO/PO provides direction and leadership for the compliance program at MRH and CAD and manages the implementation and ongoing effectiveness of compliance program activities. The CO/PO coordinates compliance activities as directed by the Northern Light Health Director of Compliance, the Northern Light Health VP/Chief Compliance & Internal Audit Officer, the Hospital Board of Trustees and the President. The CO/PO carries out the usual and customary duties of the Hospital Compliance and Privacy Officer and also acts as intermediary between the Hospitals and Northern Light Health in all manner of compliance-related matters, including participating in Northern Light Health Compliance Task Force and work groups. The CO/PO promotes an awareness and understanding of positive ethical and moral principles consistent with the mission and values and is responsible for ensuring that the specific goals and objectives of the compliance program are both consistent with the standards of Northern Light Health/Hospital and are carried out effectively. The CO/PO oversees the ongoing activities related to the development, implementation, maintenance and adherence to policies and procedures and provides regular reports to the Board of Trustees.
The CO/PO develops, implements, and maintains each Hospital's Compliance Program to assure compliance with internal policies and procedures and all applicable federal and state health care laws and regulations, including HIPAA. The CO/PO promotes quality and provides service, assistance and guidance to Hospital staff on all manner of compliance and privacy-related matters; develops and reviews compliance policies and procedures; creates and implements compliance education; identifies potential areas of vulnerability and risk; and develops, implements and monitors corrective action plans to resolve instances of conduct that do not conform to Northern Light Health policies or to federal or state laws or regulations. The CO/PO also performs additional duties as directed in support of other system compliance-related functions.

Education and Experience:
•Bachelor's degree required.
•A graduate degree in Business, Law, Health Administration or suitable related discipline preferred.
•CHC/CHP/CCEP preferred. Will be expected to obtain healthcare compliance and privacy certifications within 12 months of start date.
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
•Minimum 5 years of experience in health care operations including addressing health care-related regulatory and compliance issues, or equivalent experience, required.
•Understanding of coding and reimbursement systems preferred.
•Familiarity with health care laws, regulations, and standards, including HIPAA, strongly preferred.
•Hospital compliance officer or operational experience strongly preferred.
•Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Strong communication and leadership skills are essential. Must effectively present to large and small audiences.
•Strong analytical skills. Attention to every detail.
•Highest degree of credibility, integrity and discretion.
•Comfortable working independently and able to effectively manage large, complex projects through their entire life cycle with minimal supervision. Thrives on wide variety of intellectually challenging work. Comfortable assessing complex facts that may not lead to a black or white answer.
•Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications such as Word and Excel.
Physical Demands:
•Requires the ability to travel to Member Organizations as needed.
•Sedentary: Exerting up to 10 lbs. occasionally, sitting most of the time, and only brief periods of standing and walking.
