POSITION SUMMARY: Assist pharmacists in medication preparation and distribution while ensuring a high degree of quality and accuracy during daily tasks. Pharmacy Technicians communicate with co-workers and other clinical staff members, including RNs, CNAs, and Pharmacists, to ensure correct and timely medication distribution to patients.Pharmacy Technicians are responsible for refilling automated dispensing machines, preparing medications for distribution and delivering medications to patient care areas. Pharmacy technicians are also required to have a solid understanding of aseptic technique and be skilled in compounding hazardous and non-hazardous medications. Pharmacy technicians must be able to participate in the medication reconciliation process to include interviewing patients and contacting Provider offices and Patient Pharmacies for complete medication lists. Pharmacy technicians are also expected to be cross-trained within the pharmacy department, so that coverage may be provided when needed. Pharmacy Technicians are expected to attend staff meetings, and be up to date on hospital policies and procedures. Additional duties and responsibilities may include participating in training of employees and quality assurance checks.
EDUCATION/LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS: High School diploma or equivalent required. Active Maine Pharmacy Technician License required or eligible to obtain. Pharmacy
experience preferred. Recommend National Pharmacy Technician Certification.
OTHER SKILLS REQUIRED: Computer competency as well as knowledge of the metric system and ability to perform basic algebraic math calculations (ratios, proportions). Must be able to operate telephone equipment, photocopier, fax machine. Must be able to prioritize workflow, demonstrate successful use of critical thinking and problem solving skills and exemplify integrity and flexibility in changes of shift or workflow. Must exhibit a caring attitude toward patients, co-workers, and other customers.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to stand for long periods of time and withstand extended periods of walking (up to 10 hours per shift). Must also have the ability to lift up to 40 pounds and perform repetitive movements.
WORKING REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to function independently in a pressure-filled environment while working as a member of a team. Must demonstrate workflow prioritization and have high standards for quality and accuracy of work performed. Must work closely with Pharmacists to ensure precise and timely preparation and distribution of medications to patient care areas. Use of proper phone etiquette to communicate with all staff is required.
