GENERAL DESCRIPTION/STATEMENT:

Using AR Gould's Standards of Behavior-demonstrate professionalism at all times with patients and co-workers. A team player is necessary for this position of variable skills, organization and independent working environment. Fast paced setting requires independent thinking and ability and willingness to be flexible and adaptable to changes.

Ophthalmic Assistant will be supervised by the clinical supervisor and managed by the Manager overseeing the Practice. He/she will report directly to the Clinical Supervisor or directly to the Manager/ in the absence of Clinical Supervisor for assistance/questions/concerns/issues regarding responsibilities(see Essential Duties below).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

1. Patient Care - Escort patients into exam room and perform initial evaluation, including chief complaint, medical and ophthalmic history, visual acuity and refraction, evaluation of pupils,tonometry, slit lamp examination for chamber depth and rubeosis, and tonometry.

2. Perform diagnostic tests that may be required depending on the clinical situation,including keratometry, IOL measurements, corneal topography, pachymetry,optical coherence tomography (OCT), visual fields and retinal photography.

3. Prepareall necessary forms needed to obtain patient consent.

4. Organize instruments and supplies and prepare sterile field.

5. Cleans room

6. Sets up room for and assists with laser procedures, surgical procedures and intraocular procedures.

7. Monitor patient flow.

8. Transcribe for physician, when available.

9. Patient education.

10. Maintain mandatory education compliance.

11. Monitor patient flow. Direct physician to the next appropriate room.

12. Give reports to optometrists' and other physicians' offices when appropriate.

13. Assisting screening patients' telephone calls and "walk-ins". Answer patient's questions and concerns as appropriate. Consults with provider as indicated.

14. Monitor and restock inventory of clinical and medical supplies.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist other staff and providers as required with special projects and requests.


LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:

1. No license is required.

2. Ophthalmic Assistant will be expected to successfully complete Home Study Course for Ophthalmic Assisting within the first year of employment.

3. Following successful completion of Home Study Course in Ophthalmic Assisting, the Ophthalmic Assistant will be expected to achieve certification as Certified Ophthalmic Assistant within one year or within the allowed time frame as specified by JCAHPO.

4. College degree preferred or equivalent experience.

5. BLS is required within the firstweek of employment. Employees must maintain CPR certification throughout employment when in a clinical position.

6. De-escalation and workplace violence training will be completed at hire prior to release from orientation.

AVAILABILITYREQUIREMENTS:


Weekdays, but may in frequently require some early morning and/or evening hours.

EDUCATION, SKILLS,EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


Ø High school diploma or G.E.D;

Ø Math/Arithmetic – Must be able to add, subtract,divide, perform calculations with fractions, and calculate percentages.

Ø Previous completion of, or eligible to complete,the Ophthalmic Medical Assistant Course.

Ø Previous experience as an Ophthalmology Assistant or comparable patient care experience.

Ø Demonstrated strength in patient teaching/education.

Ø BCLS Certified or eligible.

15. Sight. Near Vision, requires 20/20, Far Vision requires 20/40.

16. Hearing. Requires hearing whispered voice at 8 feet.

17. Speech. Must be able to speak full sentences of regular and technical conversation.

18. Exposure to Infection: Slight.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:

1. High/LowTemperature. Low temperature, below30 degrees Fahrenheit. High temperature,70 – 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Hazardous Noise. None anticipated under normal working conditions.

3. Working with Others. Great, association is frequent and comprises a major portion of the job.
