Under the supervision of the Health InformationServices Supervisor, and guidance of the Health Information Services LeadPerson or Transcription Coordinator, the Health Information Services Technicianverifies receipt of, assembles and analyzes medical records of dischargedpatients. The HIS Technician furtherprocesses records by entering and updating physician documentationdeficiencies, and assisting physicians presenting to the department for recordcompletion. The HIS Technician isresponsible for reviewing requests for and appropriately releasing confidential,legally protected, patient information.Other work includes preparation of birth and death certificates, withsubsequent transmission of data to the State of Maine
, the location and pulling of recordsfor patient care, audits, quality review and risk review activities. The incumbent performs duties and tasks inaccordance with standards established for the job. The incumbent may haveaccess to highly confidential patient, employee and/or Mercy proprietaryinformation, and must handle & protect the information in accordance withhospital & system policies, HIPAA requirements and the highest level ofethical standards. The incumbent is responsible for reporting all securityevents, potential events, or other security risks to the organization. Theincumbent is responsible for participation in and completion of all patientsafety initiatives appropriate to the position, and conducts all jobresponsibilities according to the Mission and Values of Northern Light Mercy Hospital.
A High School Diploma or GED is required. Post-secondary education and training inmedical secretarial or through an accredited health information technologyprogram is preferred.This position requires six (6) months experiencein a healthcare environment, preferably in records processing. Must have good interpersonal skills as theincumbent interacts with physicians, other departments, staff, and individualsoutside the hospital. Must be able tooperate independently in completing all tasks with minimal guidance from theSupervisor. Must be highly accountablefor accuracy, quality, and timeliness of work.Incumbent's performance impacts the ability of the hospital to keep acurrent revenue stream. Additionally,incumbent has access to and is responsible for appropriate release of highlyconfidential , legally protected patient information.
