Job Details The Cook/Baker is responsible for preparing assigned items for all meals in the cafeteria and for the patient through sanitary and safe means. Must be able to bake deserts. Needs knowledge of sanitation and cooking skills. Will be in charge of evening shift every other weekend. The work environment consists of a hospital kitchen setting and includes exposure to and use of various kitchen machines. It also may include exposure to hazardous substances and be somewhat stressful.


High school diploma or equivalent required. At least one year of food service management and food preparation experience required. Graduate of certified trade school with emphasis on quantity food preparation is preferred. Job related experience in institutional food preparation is desirable. Cognitive requirements include the ability to calculate recipe quantities and make accurate projections. A demonstrated understanding of foods and recipes so that dietary modification may be made; maintaining a high quality of food service is necessary. Must have good communication skills. Must know and apply principles of sanitation and safety in handing food and equipment, particularly extremely hot equipment, boiling water and sharp objects. Must be willing to learn or be able to operate and clean many pieces of equipment well and safely including but not limited to: food slicers, ovens, broilers, steam-jacketed kettles, food processors and grills. Must be willing to receive training specific to his/her job - including basic computer skills. A neat and professional appearance is required. Must have a demonstrated ability to supervise others.
