Maine faces a growing crisis with rising rates of substance use disorder and fatal overdoses affecting women, children, and families especially hard. Too often, generational poverty, trauma, and lack of support create cycles that are difficult to break.

But there is hope.

At McAuley Residence, a program of Northern Light Mercy Hospital, recovery is not just possible—it’s being built, one family at a time. Since 1988, this life-changing program has provided safe, transitional housing and comprehensive support to mothers and children affected by substance use disorder, behavioral health challenges, and trauma. What began as a shelter for single women has grown into a powerful two-generation model of healing, helping entire families rebuild their lives.

Today, McAuley Residence supports 42 families across three Maine communities:
  • Elm Terrace (Portland): 18 families (mothers and children up to age 10)
  • Winter Street (Portland): 10 families (mothers and children ages 0–18), opened in early 2025
  • Bangor: 14 families (mothers and children up to age 10)
Through a structured, three-phase program, mothers gain stability, strengthen parenting skills, and receive personalized support while their children thrive in a safe, nurturing environment.

And because the need is so great, we’re proud to announce a major expansion: by late 2026, McAuley Residence will open in four new communities in Houlton, Rockland, Rumford, and Skowhegan, bringing hope, housing, and healing to even more families across rural Maine.

This is more than housing. It’s a future. And it’s made possible by donors like you who believe in second chances.

Thank you for helping families heal, grow, and thrive, together.
