A focus on more sustainable operations supports healthier patients, staff, and communities
Brewer, Maine (September 25, 2025) - In recognition for achievement and innovation in healthcare sustainability, all nine hospitals within the Northern Light Health system have received the Greenhealth Partner for Change Award from Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to environmental sustainability in healthcare. Additionally, Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor and Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital in Ellsworth were each awarded the Circle of Excellence Award in the climate category.
The Greenhealth Partner for Change Award recognizes superior performance in environmental sustainability, covering a range of different sustainability programs and activities. The Circle of Excellence Awards celebrate hospitals who have not only earned an award for all around sustainability achievement, but who have also been identified as the top scoring programs for each category of sustainability.
“At a time of unprecedented financial challenge, it’s really an honor to be recognized nationally for the work that our employees and partners are doing to lessen our effects on the environment while also providing a favorable economic impact,” says Tim Doak, chief environmental sustainability officer. “These awards are a reflection of their efforts, as well as our commitment to the health of our patients and the communities we serve.”
Systemwide, Northern Light Health has cut greenhouse gas emissions by 13% since 2021, the first year for which calculations are available.
