Registration is now open! Please register to join our Seventh Annual Northern Light Research Expo. This half-day free virtual event will be held on Wednesday, May 24th. The 2023 Research Expo will feature a series of sessions by ZOOM from 11:30am to 4:00pm. Online attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the innovative research being performed at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center and throughout the state of Maine. You can attend one session or all four, and view poster presentations online. Registration is required. CME and CNE Continuing Education credits are available.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of the Northern Light Research Expo, attendee will be able to:
 
Session 1:
  1. To understand the scope of projects at MaineHealth
  2. To clarify how clinical trials and NIH studies are conducted
  3. To fully appreciate the role of NIH in reaching rural communities
 
Session 2:
  1. Explain the aging brain and the cognitive functions most susceptible to decline
  2. Understand the relationship between mental health and physical health
  3. Identify factors related to increased risk or resilience for cognitive decline
  4. Discuss types of activities that might promote brain health and increase wellbeing in older adults
 
Session 3:
  1. To learn what training opportunities are available from the NNE-CTR for clinicians interested in conducting clinical research
  2. To hear about the content of these training opportunities and how them may benefit research-oriented clinicians
  3. To learn how to participate in the available training opportunities
  4. Describe the prevalence of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in Maine.
  5. List some of the major risk factors for CKD.
  6. Summarize how Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS) are designed.
  7. Describe how sequence variants are characterized and classified.
  8. Summarize the goals of the Maine CKD Genetics Study.
 
Session 4:
  1. List the top reasons why PPE is important
  2. Explain the most common reasons why PPE is not used
  3. Explain how 99% of all diseases are spread
  4. Clinical research options at Northern Light Cancer Care
  5. Learn about Maine Cancer Genomics Initiative (MCGI)
  6. How targeted therapies are used in oncology
  7. Learn about TAPUR study
  8. How do we utilize genomics in Oncology

  • Evaluation Surveys will be sent the day before to those who have registered for the Research Expo.
    Please be on the lookout for that email!
  • Your feedback is appreciated; please complete the Evaluation Survey after each session that you attend.
  • To receive Continuing Education Credits, YOU WILL NEED to complete an evaluation survey for each session attended.

Dr. Jessica Bloom-Foster is a planner for the Research Expo. She is a clinical presenter for Organon company which makes Nexplanon. All relevant financial relationships have been mitigated.
