Acadia receives grant to enhance access to substance use disorder treatment

Date: 07/11/2022

July 11, 2022 - Northern Light Acadia Hospital has received $100,000 in grant funding over two years from the Maine Health Access Foundation (MeHAF) through their Systems Improvement and Innovation Responsive Grants program to enhance substance use disorder treatment for Mainers in Penobscot County.

Acadia Hospital serves as the Integrated Behavioral Health lead for Northern Light Health. This grant will allow Acadia Hospital to provide trauma informed care training for front line staff at Eastern Maine Medical Center’s primary care offices, reducing stigma and increasing comfort for those seeking treatment for substance use disorder and mental health issues. In addition, this will enhance community partnerships with the Bangor Area Recovery Network and the Together Place Peer Run Recovery Center, providing additional recovery supports.

“Because substance use disorder treatment and other behavioral health needs are among MeHAF’s long term funding priorities, we are consistently seeking new ways to support low barrier access for those who are seeking care,” says Barbara Leonard, President & CEO of the Maine Health Access Foundation. “Northern Light’s plan for an integrated, cross-practice referral system highlights the kind of change that’s needed, and, ideally, could be considered across the state.”

“We are grateful to receive this grant from the Maine Health Access Foundation,” says Scott Oxley, MBA, president of Northern Light Acadia Hospital. “As substance use disorder continues to increase in Maine, it is critical that Acadia Hospital strengthen its resources as the leader in Integrated Behavioral Health for the Northern Light Health System. Doing so ensures that we can further support Northern Light Health providers who serve Mainers from Portland to Presque Isle.”

Jesse Higgins, RN, MSN, PMHNP, director of Integrated Behavioral Health for Northern Light Acadia Hospital, co-authored the grant request and she agrees. “We are at a different place in the pandemic, and so many Mainers are struggling with trauma and substance use. Our goal is to equip all Northern Light employees with the training, tools, and resources we need to warmly welcome and care for patients and families affected by these issues. We are so grateful for our wonderful community partners as we work together to realize our shared vision of a compassionate, destigmatized community.”
